Marine Two Way Radios for Vessels and Port Operations

Marine communication operates under stricter requirements than land-based radio. VHF Channel 16 is the international distress and calling frequency monitored by the U.S. Coast Guard around the clock — having the right radio, correctly configured, is a regulatory and safety baseline, not an option.

AXDIGITAL is supplier for Icom – the benchmark brand for marine VHF in the U.S. commercial market - and carries Motorola Solutions and Hytera UHF portable radios for port and dockside operations. All products are backed by manufacturer warranty and in-house technical support.

Who Uses Marine Two Way Radios

Marine radio equipment serves a range of commercial operations - from vessels underway to shore-based teams coordinating on the dock.

Marine Radios

Commercial Vessels and Offshore Operations

Any vessel operating in U.S. coastal or inland waterways requires VHF marine radio for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication. Fixed-mount VHF radios are standard on the bridge, providing full power output and DSC distress capability. Handheld VHF units give crew members on deck an independent backup when separated from the bridge or operating small craft away from the main vessel.

Marine Radios

Marinas and Yacht Facilities

Marina operators need reliable communication between dock staff, harbormaster, and vessels on approach. VHF channel monitoring keeps dock crews coordinated with incoming boats, while internal staff coordination across the facility – between dockside, fueling, maintenance, and reception - is typically handled more efficiently with UHF portable radios, which penetrate buildings and structures that block VHF signals.

Marine Radios

Seaport and Terminal Operations

Port terminals operate with two parallel communication requirements. Vessels, harbor pilots, and tugboat crews coordinate docking maneuvers on VHF. Simultaneously, stevedores, crane operators, cargo supervisors, and dock workers manage loading operations using UHF portable radios – which perform better in the steel-heavy, obstacle-dense environment of a working terminal. Both systems run independently and serve different operational layers within the same port.

Marine Radios

Cruise and Passenger Vessel Operations

Large passenger vessels require communication across multiple departments – bridge, deck crews, engineering, security, and hospitality – operating simultaneously. VHF covers external navigation and Coast Guard contact. UHF portable radios handle internal coordination across the ship, where steel bulkheads and multi-deck layouts make VHF propagation unreliable at close range.

VHF and UHF – Two Frequencies, Two Roles in Marine Operations

Understanding the difference between VHF and UHF in a marine context prevents the most common equipment selection error.

Marine Radios

VHF marine radios (156–174 MHz) are the standard for all vessel-to-vessel and vessel-to-shore communication. They operate on internationally designated maritime channels, including Channel 16 – the universal distress and calling frequency. VHF is the required standard for GMDSS compliance, Coast Guard communication, and vessel traffic services. Fixed-mount units typically output 25 watts; handheld units operate at up to 6 watts.

UHF portable radios (400–512 MHz) serve a different function: internal team coordination in marine environments where VHF is not appropriate or effective. Dockside logistics at a seaport, internal staff communication at a marina, and onboard crew coordination on large vessels are the primary use cases. UHF penetrates steel structures and concrete more effectively than VHF, making it the practical standard for short-range communication in built or vessel environments.

Most commercial marine operations require both. AXDIGITAL configures each system – VHF for external maritime communication and UHF for internal operational coordination – as a matched solution for your facility or vessel type.

Handheld and Fixed-Mount VHF Marine Radios

Marine VHF equipment comes in two form factors, each suited to a specific operational role.

Fixed-mount VHF radios are installed on the vessel's bridge or helm station and connected to an external antenna for maximum range. Running at 25 watts, they provide the strongest possible signal for ship-to-shore communication, DSC distress alerting with MMSI identification, and continuous Channel 16 monitoring. Fixed-mount units are the required primary radio for commercial vessels operating in U.S. waters.

Handheld VHF radios provide mobility and backup capability. Deck crew, small boat operators, and personnel working away from the bridge carry handheld units for independent communication. Modern handheld marine VHF radios carry IPX7 or IPX8 waterproof ratings and, on most models, are designed to float. Units with integrated GPS and DSC capability transmit the vessel's coordinates automatically as part of a digital distress call – a functionally important safety feature for crew operating independently.

Icom's marine VHF lineup is the primary reference for both categories in the AXDIGITAL inventory, with models covering both recreational and commercial-grade specifications.

AXDIGITAL is an authorized U.S. dealer for Icom. Icom is the benchmark brand for marine VHF in the U.S. commercial market – trusted by the U.S. Coast Guard and commercial shipping operators globally. Motorola and Hytera UHF portable radios cover the dockside and internal coordination requirements of marina and port operations.

All equipment is backed by manufacturer warranty. Our technical team advises on the correct configuration for your vessel class, facility type, or port operation – including VHF and UHF as a combined system where both are required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a commercial vessel operating in U.S. waters need a specific FCC license for marine VHF?

U.S.-registered vessels operating exclusively in domestic waters are not required to hold a ship station license for VHF marine radio – though obtaining one is recommended for vessels that may enter foreign ports or international waters, where it becomes mandatory. Commercial vessels required to carry radio equipment under SOLAS or U.S. Coast Guard regulations must also comply with GMDSS standards, which include DSC-capable VHF equipment and a registered MMSI number. We advise on the regulatory requirements specific to your vessel type and operating area.

Can we use the same portable radios our dock staff already has on the vessels as well?

IStandard land-mobile UHF portable radios are not designed or type-accepted for use on maritime channels and cannot replace VHF marine radios for vessel-to-vessel or vessel-to-shore communication. However, UHF portables are fully appropriate for internal crew coordination onboard large vessels and dockside operations – the same models used by shore staff can be extended to vessel crews for that purpose. VHF marine radios and UHF portables serve different functions and operate on separate channel plans; the two systems complement each other rather than overlap.

What waterproofing rating do we need for marine radio equipment in a commercial port environment?

For handheld VHF marine radios, IPX7 is the minimum practical standard - it covers submersion to one meter for 30 minutes, which handles accidental drops overboard and heavy rain exposure. IPX8-rated units tolerate deeper or longer submersion and are preferable for crew working on open decks or in heavy weather. For UHF portable radios used dockside or on vessels, IP67 provides equivalent protection. In saltwater environments, corrosion resistance of the chassis and connectors is an additional consideration beyond the IP rating – we specify equipment appropriate for marine exposure, not just general industrial use.

Equip Your Vessel or Port Operation

Marine radio requirements vary significantly by vessel class, facility size, and regulatory obligation. Our team advises on the correct equipment – VHF, UHF, or both – matched to your specific operational profile, with manufacturer warranty and ongoing technical support.
