A vessel with separate helm and cockpit stations, or a flybridge and lower helm, requires the VHF to be operable from both positions. Mounting the IC-M424G or IC-M510 at the lower helm and running an HM-195GB to the flybridge or a second cabin gives the watch officer full radio control without leaving the station. The HM-195GB supports intercom between the two positions — a practical communication channel between crew stations without using the main VHF channel.
The command microphone replicates all radio functions: DSC distress call, channel selection, squelch, dual watch, and PA. The dedicated DSC "Distress" button on the back of the unit means a crew member at the second station can initiate a distress call directly without accessing menus. The dot-matrix LCD with white backlit display and laser-cut keypad remain readable in direct sunlight and at night — the GB variant specifically has black housing with white backlit LCD, designed for dark helm environments.
Installation distance reaches 18.3 m (60.3 ft) from the radio using two optional OPC-1541 extension cables (6.1 m each, sold separately) in addition to the included 6.1 m connection cable. For IC-M605, the OPC-2384 connection cable is required instead of direct connection. The AquaQuake™ function clears water from the speaker grille using vibration — a feature that matters on an exposed flybridge in spray conditions. IP67 rating holds at 1 m depth for 30 minutes for the microphone unit itself.
