Why Professionals Choose the Hytera MD612i VHF

The MD612i VHF is a vehicle-mounted mobile radio — 164 × 43 × 150 mm and 1100 g (2.4 lb) — that bolts to a dashboard or console and runs off the vehicle's 13.6 V supply. Hytera positions this model as an entry-level device, which is reflected in the design of the front panel. The front panel features a single-line LED display (49 × 27 mm) that shows the current channel and the device status.

The transmit power of the MD612i VHF radio ranges from 5 to 50 watts. Consequently, in the VHF band, a 50-watt mobile radio provides significantly greater communication range than a 4–5 watt portable radio. This is advantageous for large-scale sites, highways, or open terrain, where the signal from a portable radio might drop out.

This mobile radio model operates in both analog and digital (DMR) modes and automatically switches between them. Dual-mode capability is convenient for enterprises looking to transition to DMR communications, as it allows for the phased replacement of older or analog radios. On DMR Tier II systems Hytera MD612i VHF also supports pseudo-trunking, which uses whichever digital timeslot is free to connect a call faster.

Built to MIL-STD-810 C through G and rated IP54, it handles dust and splashing water — the level of protection a cab or a service truck actually sees. It operates from −30 °C to +60 °C, so cold-morning starts and hot afternoons stay within spec.

The radio's audio output is 4W through the built-in speaker and 8W through an external speaker, which is loud enough to drown out engine and road noise. The Hyt MD621i does not have built-in GPS for location tracking by the dispatch center. GPS may be available with optional equipment — the POA134 module plus the GPS04 antenna. This standard MD612i-V1 has no factory Bluetooth. If you need Bluetooth functionality, use the MD612i-BT-V1 model, which is the same radio with Bluetooth added. As a land mobile radio, the Hyt MD612i is FCC Part 90 equipment.

Best-Fit Industries for the MD612i

The design and features of the MD612i VHF mobile radio suit businesses across many industries. In practice, it makes the most sense for:

  • Logistics & Transportation — installed in tractors and vans, with dispatch and GPS tracking (POA134 module plus GPS04 antenna).
  • Construction — service and construction vehicles and wide on-site coverage, with IP54 and MIL-STD-810 handling dust and vibration.
  • Security — patrol and service vehicles staying linked to a base station.
  • Manufacturing — plant grounds, forklifts, and transport between workshops and warehouses, or a control station at the base.
  • Public Safety — support and service vehicles as a commercial DMR fleet, not the dedicated P25 radios used by frontline emergency services.

FCC Licensing and Compliance Support

Operating the MD612i on business or industrial frequencies in the United States requires an FCC license under Part 90 (the Land Mobile Radio Service). The license is tied to your organization and the specific frequencies you are authorized to use, not to the individual radio.

Before transmitting, an FCC-certified frequency coordinator assigns frequencies suited to your location and operation, which helps avoid interference with other licensed users nearby. Most business and industrial uses fall under Part 90 — including fleet, construction, security, manufacturing, and logistics operations.

As an authorized Hytera dealer, AXDIGITAL supplies the MD612i-V1 and helps customers understand Part 90 licensing and frequency coordination. We program each radio to your licensed frequencies and CTCSS/DMR settings before shipping, so units arrive ready to use.

The MD612i is FCC Part 90 equipment for land mobile operation in the 136–174 MHz VHF band. Contact our team to confirm licensing and coordination requirements for your fleet.

FAQ

How is the MD612i powered and installed?

The MD612i is a vehicle-mounted mobile radio, powered from a 13.6 V DC vehicle supply through the PWC10 cable and secured with the BRK29 bracket. It needs an external VHF antenna (not included) matched to 136–174 MHz. At up to 50 W, it covers far more range than a handheld radio.

Does the MD612i have GPS or Bluetooth built in?

GPS is not built in — location tracking needs the external POA134 module and GPS04 antenna, ordered separately. Bluetooth is also not included on this standard MD612i-V1. If your team uses wireless PTT pods or headsets, specify the MD612i-BT-V1, the same radio with factory Bluetooth.
